Short Version

There are three license levels in the US, Technician, General, and Extra. To pass the Technician exam and get on the air we recommend the “ham cram”. The test consists of 35 questions from a pool of 412, all multiple choice. The strategy is to memorize the answers using flashcards and practice exams. So you want to be a HAM?

Ham radio is a fun and challenging hobby.  It’s opportunities range from local voice communication (VHF\UHF), to long range voice (HF) to CW to Digital modes to Slow Scan Television to …….. .  The ham radio operator can pick one mode of operation or expand into as many as they want.  W7RAG has operators with experience and are will to help the new HAM to go in almost any direction they choose.  Known as ELMERS these folk will spend as much time with you as you want or need to become proficient with your chosen mode(s).

Ham radio is also involved with community service.  W7RAG provides communications for several events that happen in the Columbia Gorge.  Take a look at the Public Service area of this website.  The events both support our local communities and they are personally satisfying.  You know that you help insure the safety of event participants, you practice your hobby, and you enjoy the camaraderie of fellow operators.

Another aspect of Amateur Radio is Emergency Communications.  It is important when a disaster hits that we are able, if asked, to provide communications for our communities.  W7RAG has in the past and will in the future train to provide that communications support.

This is only the surface.  You can make the hobby whatever you want it to be.  And in the W7RAG area you have folks that want you in the fold and will help anyway possible to make you a HAM.
